Follow up & Observation
The AMC emergency room will include a one day observation and follow up unit for patients who require relatively prolonged treatment or a large number of diagnostic tests. People whose symptoms are troubling but not clearly defined can be candidates.
It has been shown that for a variety of presenting symptoms, a day hospitalization and follow up period versus impatient treatment leads to lower costs of treatment and higher quality outcomes.
Consider a person who comes to the ER with chest pain that could be a symptom of a heart attack – or just indigestion. In observation care, doctors can administer tests and short-term therapies in order to achieve a reliable and valid diagnosis.
